RIVIERA MAYA IN CRISIS DUE TO COVID, TULUM HAS HIGHEST INCIDENCE

Quintana Roo is seen as the misbehaved child of México, this is because while half the states can already visualize how they are reducing the contagion rate while on green, 15 others are already painted yellow; but to the surprise of the people of Quintana Roo, this is the only state that after 5 weeks leads an increase in the number of cases of the coronavirus, a fact that keeps us in the orange color of the epidemiological traffic light, from May 24 to May 30.

We said it a few days ago, in the Riviera Maya the Covid pandemic does not seem to be a believable threat for many unwary people who continue to travel through the state, apparently without much regret, as they ignore the basic measures to avoid the risk of further contagion.

Sadness looms in the words of an officer who regrets to see how disobedience reigns in these destinations, he is Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez and he’s in charge of the Secretariat of Public Security. He also made an echo in the streets of the tourist resort of Tulum at the end of March, between complaints and from his patrol car he asked people to use their masks.

The warning from the state executive has already been issued; this increase in the number of cases would bring great sorrow to thousands of families, because if the contingency that indicates the red traffic light is declared, tourism would be hindered due to fewer options for entertainment.

Soft measures lead to accumulation of cases.

According to the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave), Tulum, the destination par excellence for the world’s vacationers, is threatened with a 68 percent increase in the number of Covid cases, followed by Bacalar with a 50 percent increase, Benito Juárez with 45, Cozumel with 36, and Isla Mujeres with 20 percent.

Some residents are already drawing their own conclusions on social media, the cases of Benito Juárez could also belong to Tulum because of their proximity, besides being the epicenter of many activities, it is also the one that sees the movement of many people by public transportation, which in turn is a source of infection that has not been able to adhere to the suggestions to lower its capacity to 50 percent as recommended by the governor.

Although the recommendations are well established, little or no attention is paid to them, bars and nightclubs remain open, tourists understand that all of these are not mandatory, travel bans are not enforced and there is no requirement to present negative tests.

Because of this, Alethse de la Torre Rosas, director of the National Center for Prevention and Control, asked for unity and to think about the people who live here: “We must start to show solidarity with the health of the people who live in Quintana Roo, all the actions of the traffic light are associated with actions aimed at reducing the risk in each of the states,” she said and invited the population to follow the suggestions of the authorities.
