 Quintana Roo ready for hurricane season, Specialized Committee is installed

Last Monday, May 31, was the day when it was decided to talk about one of the most critical moments of the year for the people of Quintana Roo and its neighboring areas, the strong winds and gray skies are about to become present, while the summer heat accumulates.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic, from June 1 to November 30; low pressure that forms over tropical waters along with thunderstorm activity is what occurs in tropical cyclones, which are followed by tropical disturbances and depressions, if the wind speed exceeds 17 meters per second we are talking about storms, and when it exceeds 33 meters per second the hurricane will be a typhoon for those who are on the western Pacific side.

According to CONAGUA authorities, between 15 to 20 cyclonic systems are expected to form in the Atlantic Ocean, of which 8 to 11 would be tropical storms, 4 to 5 would be category 1 or 2 and 3 to 4 could become too intense (category 3, 4 or even 5).

The Operational Committee is ready

In order to foresee what these natural phenomena may bring, the Committee for the Attention of the Rainy Season and Tropical Cyclones 2021 was installed, through a virtual session the authorities of the region contacted each other to start the preventive measures within the 11 municipalities of the state.

In strict adherence to the pandemic still affecting the state of Quintana Roo, 961 temporary shelters will be available, of which 621 are rural, 245 urban and 95 for tourists, with a total capacity for 125,523 people.

With 650 uniformed personnel distributed throughout the state, it will be possible to apply the DN-III plan in case it is required, as explained by General José Martín Luna de la Luz.
