After 7 years “Mamitas” witnesses a turtle’s nesting
Quintana Roo, México – It was in the early morning of Saturday, May 29th when César, a worker of the security team of the Mamitas beach club realized that something was happening on the beach, he made a patrol as usual and observed that a turtle had come out of the sea, he watched it carefully while it crawled around the sun loungers. The clock read 3:30 a.m.
After a few minutes of prowling around the area, the turtle positioned herself and began to dig a hole, she stood up her body with her flippers, and then dug a nest to lay her eggs, César knew he had to be careful because the nesting process is very important and the female has to be calm and undistracted, so he simply watched her until she covered her nest with her flippers, and then headed out to the ocean.
Once the turtle left, César and the security team cordoned off the area by placing some wooden sticks and a caution line, they also distributed sun loungers around the nest, with the objective of protecting it and avoiding that anyone could compromise it. During the course of Sunday the workers of Mamitas were well informed of what was happening and in addition to their daily activities, they all helped so that no one would approach the nest.
On Monday morning at about 10:40 a.m., The Sustainable Environment and Climate Change Department, represented by Jorge Ernesto Pavón Reynaga, technical field coordinator in the sea turtle department of Solidaridad, went to the Mamitas facilities to remove the nest and in a process that lasted approximately 30 minutes, they removed, cleaned and counted the 154 eggs that the female turtle had laid.
The employees of the Mamitas beach club stated that it was an incredible experience, because even though it is sea turtle nesting season, as we had already informed, a story like this had not been reported since 2014 and many of the participants had never had the opportunity to witness such a beautiful moment given to us by nature.
