How come everyone wants to visit Tulum?
Vestiges of many years ago, beaches that make anyone fall in love, millenary tradition and an elite life is what has made Tulum attract international attention, so much so that it is currently crowned as the most visited city by tourists, even more than Chichen Itzá, a tourist center known for hosting one of the seven wonders of the world.
Not even COVID-19 could prevent Tulum from reaching such a high number of visitors so far this year, in 2020 it reached 624,431 tourists, much less than the 823,795 of Chichen Itzá, while in 2021 it has reached 465,176 visitors against the 443,345 of Chichen Itzá, of course the year is not over yet and the numbers can still change, however, so far Tulum, Quintana Roo is consolidated as the most popular city for visitors.
Although one could think that the effect that the current world pandemic had reduced the number of visitors in the most famous ruins of Yucatán, it did not happen exactly like that, since the 6 month shutdown that even went through the spring equinox (March 21), one of the most important dates for this tourist center, did not reduce the numbers in 2020 and maintained its first place position in the past year.
Undoubtedly the different guidelines that must be followed when visiting these emblematic places: sanitary safety and sanitation protocols, have led to lower numbers than those of previous years. Even so this year is still in the spotlight, because from one moment to another the situation could change and the numbers could rebound at any of these places.
And if we talk about popular archeological vestiges in Quintana Roo, we must also mention Cobá because, although the number of visitors it handles are lower than those of Tulum and Chichen Itzá, these have increased significantly, which has caused this tourist destination to be placed above Monte Albán, Cholula and this year even Palenque, so we have to keep our eyes on the magic hidden in this beautiful place full of history.
