BELIZE TO OPEN ITS BORDERS WITH MEXICO; FOR TOURISTS ONLY

Once again there is hope for Belize and its commercial allies, thanks to the fact that the government of the Central American country has expressed that it is preparing to reopen the Mexican border.

The anticipation comes after a strong downturn in the economy for Chetumalians and Belizeans, who, given their neighboring conditions, are closely related. It is from next Monday, May 31, that the land borders will be open, it should be noted that it is only for foreign tourists (or travelers with special permits), since Belizean nationals must remain in their country.

Phased opening

The deep blue Caribbean Sea that embraces its islands can be enjoyed only by visitors who present a negative PCR Covid-19 test, taken within 72 hours prior to their arrival, and who have a reservation in Gold Standard hotels.

In a second phase, in addition to foreign tourists, other visitors like friends and relatives of the locals will also be able to arrive. Once these first phases have run their course, a full reopening (phase 3) may be possible, but if this is not achieved, they will have to close the border again.

Belize is showing considerable calm thanks to the restrictions they have implemented, and the results prove it, according to their latest covid case report, from May 22 to 25 they reported only 13 new positives out of 76 active cases, and 0 deaths.

According to the executive director of the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Nicole Solano, “people feel that openness is necessary for tourism and economic recovery”, and added: “Economic recovery is a big concern at the moment and something we should focus on for sure”.
